But did you know that the blood in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born also has amazing lifesaving qualities? Indeed, this blood, previously thrown away after birth, is rich in blood stem cells that can be used to help treat over 80 different types of diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and other inherited immune disorders <a href=\"https:\/\/yorkspace.library.yorku.ca\/xmlui\/bitstream\/handle\/10315\/29885\/Haw_Jennie_2014_PhD.pdf?sequence=2&amp;isAllowed=y\">(1)<\/a>. The collection process begins immediately after the umbilical cord has been cut, takes between 3-5 minutes, and is painless and safe for both the birthing parent and baby. Once cut, the umbilical cord is cleaned, and the blood is drawn by a healthcare professional who inserts a sterile needle into the cord <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K5WRgK9L52M\">(<span style=\"font-size: 13.6px;\">2<\/span>)<\/a>. <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-90cce98 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"90cce98\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fa4db00\" data-id=\"fa4db00\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12bc84f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12bc84f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In most countries, expectant parents have two options when it comes to donating cord blood <a href=\"https:\/\/yorkspace.library.yorku.ca\/xmlui\/bitstream\/handle\/10315\/29885\/Haw_Jennie_2014_PhD.pdf?sequence=2&amp;isAllowed=y\">(<span style=\"font-size: 13.6px;\">3<\/span>)<\/a>: (1) Parents may choose to donate the cord blood to a public cord blood bank at no financial cost. If this option is selected, the public bank will collect, transport, process, test, and store the sample to be used altruistically for any person who is compatible and in need. There are currently more than 803,983 frozen units of cord blood stored in over 134 public banks across 55 countries, and more than 35,000 patients around the world have received cord blood transplants via a public cord bank <a href=\"https:\/\/bethematch.org\/transplant-basics\/cord-blood-and-transplants\/\">(<span style=\"font-size: 13.6px;\">4<\/span>)<\/a>. Alternatively,\u00a0(2) Parents may pay a fee for a private cord blood bank to collect, process and store the blood for later use by the parents, family member or child. In fact, a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/oamjms.eu\/index.php\/mjms\/article\/view\/6464\/5928\">Velikonja and colleagues (2021<\/a>) showed that only a quarter of people were aware of cord blood banking, and only a few people were able to identify at least one cord blood bank. Most people in the study also self-reported that they knew little about cord blood banking, and there was minimal difference found between professionals\u2019 and non-professionals\u2019 knowledge of cord blood donation. In their review, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1186\/s12884-018-2024-6.pdf\">Peberdy and colleagues<\/a> also found that parent\u2019s knowledge of cord blood banking and\/or donation was low. However, knowledge was higher where people had been provided with information on cord blood banking and\/or donation by their antenatal health care provider or in antenatal classes <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1186\/s12884-018-2024-6.pdf\">(6)<\/a>.
